It’s been more than three decades since the beloved romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle captured hearts across America, but child actor Ross Malinger’s memories of working with Tom Hanks remain vivid and heartfelt. Malinger, who played Jonah the devoted son of Hanks’s character, Sam recently reflected on the special father-son chemistry they shared on set, a connection that helped make the film a timeless classic.
Malinger was just 8 years old when he stepped into the role, and he told Entertainment Weekly that the natural rapport between him and Hanks went beyond mere acting. “We genuinely cared about each other,” Malinger said. “That natural chemistry allowed me to bring a lot of intensity and emotion to Jonah’s character.” Off camera, Hanks was known for being warm and playful, constantly joking and finding ways to keep the young actor smiling. One fond memory Malinger shared was a lighthearted moment at a fish market, where Hanks amusingly made the fish “say goofy things,” easing the stresses of filming.
Their friendship continued after the movie wrapped, with Hanks inviting Malinger to attend premieres of his later films, including Philadelphia in 1993 and That Thing You Do! in 1996. Malinger went on to act in over 20 TV shows and films before stepping away from Hollywood. His later career included roles in series like Good Advice, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, and guest appearances on popular shows like Seinfeld and Touched by an Angel. His final known acting role was in 2006 on the show Without a Trace.
Though he left acting behind, Malinger has explored other pursuits such as classic car restoration, IT business, and finance management at a car dealership. Yet, the bond he formed with Hanks and the experience on Sleepless in Seattle remain among his most cherished professional memories. “Tom and I worked together in harmony, and ultimately, that’s what I believe made this film a classic,” Malinger shared.
The enduring friendship and genuine warmth captured between Malinger and Hanks helped elevate Sleepless in Seattle beyond a simple romantic comedy, endearing it to audiences and turning it into a beloved cinematic gem for generations.
