Hip-hop legend LL Cool J is returning to the spotlight as the solo host for the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, bringing decades of experience and energy to one of the biggest nights in music. The awards ceremony will take place live from the UBS Arena in New York’s Long Island on September 7, airing simultaneously on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount marking the first time the VMAs will be broadcast on a major network alongside traditional platforms.
LL Cool J, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy and VMA award winner, has a rich history with the VMAs. He first won his Moon Person trophy for Best Rap in 1991 and made history as the first rapper to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1997. He co-hosted the VMAs in 2022 alongside Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, but this year marks his debut as the sole host. LL Cool J is also nominated for Best Hip Hop this year for his single “Murdergram Deux,” featuring Eminem, from his 2024 album, The Force.
Leading the 2025 nominations is pop superstar Lady Gaga, who has earned twelve nods, the most of any artist. Close behind are Bruno Mars with eleven and Kendrick Lamar with ten nominations. This year’s lineup features a star-studded list of contenders including ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter with eight nominations each, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd with seven, and Billie Eilish with six.
